Alpine Zone

What is an Alpine Zone?

An alpine zone is the high-elevation ecosystem found above the treeline on mountains, typically starting around 10,000-11,000 feet in temperate regions. This environment is characterized by harsh weather conditions, strong winds, intense UV radiation, low temperatures, and sparse vegetation consisting mainly of low-growing alpine plants and grasses. For hikers and backpackers, the alpine zone presents unique challenges including rapid weather changes, exposure to elements, and the need for specialized gear and clothing due to the extreme conditions and lack of natural shelter.
