Altimeter

What is an altimeter?

An altimeter is a device that measures altitude or elevation above sea level, commonly used by hikers and mountaineers for navigation and safety. It works by measuring atmospheric pressure, which decreases predictably with elevation, and displays the corresponding altitude reading. Altimeters help outdoor enthusiasts track their progress on climbs, confirm their location on topographic maps, and monitor weather changes, as rapid pressure drops can indicate incoming storms.
