Base Weight

What is a base weight?

Base weight is the total weight of a backpacker's gear excluding consumables like food, water, and fuel. It includes all essential items such as shelter, sleeping system, clothing, cookware, and other equipment that remain constant throughout the trip. Base weight is a crucial metric for backpackers to evaluate their pack efficiency and comfort, with ultralight backpackers typically aiming for base weights under 10 pounds. Reducing base weight allows hikers to carry more food and water, move faster, and experience less fatigue on long-distance treks.
