Contour Line

What is a contour line?

A contour line is a curved line on a topographic map that connects points of equal elevation above sea level. These lines help hikers and backpackers visualize the three-dimensional shape of terrain on a flat map, showing hills, valleys, ridges, and slopes. Lines close together indicate steep terrain, while widely spaced lines represent gentle slopes, making contour lines essential for route planning, estimating hiking difficulty, and navigation in the backcountry.
