Durable Water Repellent

What is a Durable Water Repellent?

A Durable Water Repellent (DWR) is a chemical coating applied to the outer surface of outdoor fabrics to make water bead up and roll off rather than soaking in. This treatment is commonly found on rain jackets, tents, backpacks, and other gear to maintain breathability while preventing water penetration. DWR coatings gradually wear off with use and washing, requiring periodic reapplication to maintain effectiveness. It works in conjunction with waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex to prevent the outer fabric from becoming saturated, which would compromise the gear's breathability and performance.
