Ferro Rod/Firesteel

A ferro rod (ferrocerium rod) is a fire-starting tool made of a metal alloy that produces hot sparks when scraped with a striker or sharp edge. Also called firesteel, it's a reliable backup fire starter for camping and backpacking because it works in wet conditions, at high altitudes, and in extreme temperatures where matches or lighters might fail. The rod generates sparks reaching over 3,000°F that can ignite tinder, making it an essential piece of survival gear that doesn't require fuel and can produce thousands of sparks over its lifetime.
