Gray Water

What is gray water?

Gray water is wastewater generated from washing dishes, cooking utensils, hands, or bodies during camping activities, excluding toilet waste. This soapy, food-particle contaminated water must be disposed of properly by straining out food scraps and dispersing the water at least 200 feet away from water sources, trails, and campsites. Proper gray water disposal prevents water contamination and wildlife attraction while following Leave No Trace principles essential for backcountry camping and backpacking.
