Hyponatremia

What is hyponatremia?

Hyponatremia is a dangerous medical condition that occurs when sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low, often from drinking excessive amounts of plain water during extended outdoor activities. This condition is particularly common among endurance hikers, backpackers, and trail runners who consume large quantities of water without replacing electrolytes lost through sweating. Symptoms include nausea, headache, confusion, and in severe cases can lead to seizures or coma, making it crucial for outdoor enthusiasts to balance water intake with electrolyte replacement through sports drinks or salt supplements during long activities.
