R-Value

What is an R-Value?

R-Value is a measurement of thermal resistance that indicates how well a sleeping pad or mat insulates against heat loss to the ground. The higher the R-Value, the better the insulation properties, with values typically ranging from 1 (suitable for warm summer conditions) to 6+ (for winter camping on snow). This rating helps campers and backpackers choose appropriate sleeping pads for their expected ground temperatures and seasons. Multiple pads can be stacked to add their R-Values together for increased insulation in extreme cold conditions.
