Tree Line
What is a tree line?
The tree line is the elevation above which trees cannot grow due to harsh environmental conditions like cold temperatures, strong winds, and short growing seasons. For hikers and backpackers, crossing above tree line means entering alpine terrain where natural windbreaks and shelter disappear, requiring extra preparation for exposure to weather. This transition zone marks a significant change in hiking conditions, often featuring stunning panoramic views but also increased vulnerability to lightning, wind, and temperature extremes.
