Waterproof Membrane

What is a waterproof membrane?

A waterproof membrane is a thin, synthetic barrier layer built into outdoor gear fabrics that blocks water from penetrating while allowing water vapor (sweat) to escape. Commonly found in rain jackets, pants, tents, and boots, these membranes like Gore-Tex or eVent use microscopic pores that are smaller than water droplets but larger than vapor molecules. This technology keeps hikers and backpackers dry from external moisture while preventing the buildup of condensation inside their gear during active outdoor pursuits.
