Whiteout

What is a whiteout?

A whiteout is a weather condition where blowing snow, heavy snowfall, or fog creates near-zero visibility, making it extremely difficult or impossible to see landmarks, trails, or even nearby objects. This dangerous condition can cause hikers and backpackers to become disoriented and lost, as the white snow and sky blend together, eliminating visual reference points. Whiteouts are particularly hazardous in mountainous terrain and open areas where travelers can easily wander off trails or into dangerous terrain like cliffs or avalanche zones.
