Windward
What is windward?
Windward refers to the side or direction from which the wind is blowing, opposite of leeward. In camping and hiking, understanding windward positioning is crucial for shelter placement, as the windward side of terrain features like ridges or hills experiences stronger winds and weather exposure. Campers typically seek leeward (sheltered) positions to avoid the harsh conditions found on windward slopes, though windward areas may offer better views and faster drying conditions after rain.
