Cell Balancing

What is cell balancing?

Cell balancing is a process used in multi-cell battery packs to ensure all individual cells maintain equal voltage and state of charge during charging and discharging cycles. It prevents some cells from becoming overcharged or over-discharged relative to others, which can reduce battery life, capacity, and safety. Cell balancing is typically implemented through passive methods (using resistors to dissipate excess energy) or active methods (transferring energy between cells), and is essential for lithium-ion battery management systems.
