Electrostatic Discharge

What is an Electrostatic Discharge?

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between two objects at different electrical potentials, typically caused by the buildup and rapid release of static charge. This phenomenon can generate voltages of thousands of volts and occurs when you touch a doorknob after walking on carpet or when handling electronic components. ESD poses a significant threat to sensitive electronic devices and integrated circuits, as even small discharges invisible to humans can permanently damage or degrade semiconductor components, making ESD protection protocols essential in electronics manufacturing and handling.
